Cover Story: Reducing friction at the nanoscale is a critical challenge in materials science. This study explores phonon-mediated superlubricity in 2D materials, such as graphene, through the lens of information thermodynamics. By coupling Landauer’s principle of information erasure with the Heisenberg energy–time uncertainty relation, we reveal a unified classical–quantum framework for nanoscale friction. The energy dissipation during elementary sliding events is shown to generate an entropic, Stokes-type force driven by phonon propagation. This direct thermodynamic link between microscopic information processing and mesoscopic phonon transport provides fresh insights into entropy-driven superlubricity, paving the way for advanced nanomechanical device engineering.
