Cover Story: Thousands of springs flow unseen across the Northern Apennines: “ghost springs”, rich in biodiversity yet absent from monitoring and conservation plans. In this study, they are given a scientific identity card. Integrating hydrogeology, hydrochemistry and biology across 25 springs, chosen to represent the spring variability of the entire region, we identify five strategic ecohydrogeological zones, from ophiolitic ridges to lowland Fontanili. Benthic diatoms (393 species, 41% Red-Listed) proved powerful sentinels: assemblages mirror aquifer type, and aerial taxa reveal discharge regime from a single sample. The ridge zones, hosting the most threatened taxa and the only stable water balance, are conservation priorities. This transferable framework brings ghost springs into the spotlight as sentinels of freshwater biodiversity in a changing climate. View this paper
