Cover Story: The interband cascade laser (ICL) has recently become the go-to coherent optical source for mid-wave infrared (especially 3–6 μm) applications that require high efficiency, low drive power, and small system footprint. The ICL combines the long upper-level lifetime characteristic of interband transitions with the voltage-efficient cascading of the quantum cascade laser (which employs intersubband transitions). This paper reviews the history, development, design principles, operating characteristics, and specialized architectures of ICLs. The present understanding of mechanisms that limit performance is discussed, along with potential future improvements. Newer device classes such as ICL frequency combs, interband cascade vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers, interband cascade LEDs, interband cascade detectors, and integrated ICLs are reviewed for the first time.
