Cover Story: Reconfigurable computing provides a paradigm to create intelligent systems different from classic software computing. A few vendors have dominated this market with proprietary tools resulting in fragmented ecosystems and little interoperation. A complete FPGA toolchain has recently emerged from the open-source community. Robotics is an expanding application field that may benefit from FPGAs for developing the logic between sensors and actuators, improving their responsiveness and low power consumption. Reactive robot behaviors may be easily designed following the reconfigurable computing approach and that toolchain. Abstractions such as circuit blocks and wires are provided for building robot brains. Visual programming and block libraries make it painless, reliable, and more reusable. View this paper
