Cover Story: Human navigation is a complex cognitive problem, which is not well understood today despite significant progress in neurosciences and the discovery of important spatially-correlated neurons supporting space awareness and navigation. This paper proposes an original bio-inspired navigation model based on place cells, grid cells, and head direction cells. The model emulates the behavior of these cells and can construct different strategies for indoor and outdoor navigation. The proposed model may be used for autonomous robotic platforms as well as in assistive devices for visually impaired people. View this paper
