Cover Story: Could a shingles vaccine do more than prevent shingles? Emerging evidence suggests that the recombinant zoster vaccine (RZV, Shingrix®) may have broader effects on human health, with observational studies linking vaccination to reduced risks of dementia, cardiovascular events, and all-cause mortality, as well as potential geroprotective effects. This review examines the clinical evidence behind these associations and explores two possible mechanisms: suppression of varicella zoster virus reactivation and AS01B-mediated immunoregulation. While causality remains unproven, these findings raise important questions about the wider health effects of RZV. View this paper
