Cover Story: Some of the icy moons that orbit Jupiter and Saturn, such as Europa and Enceladus, contain a subsurface water ocean that is putatively habitable. Fed with chemical building blocks from silicate mantles, and likely bearers of chemical disequilibria, these water oceans are of high interest for the search of potential extraterrestrial life forms. However, their inaccessibility hinders their sampling with our current technology. In order to inform future in situ space missions to these icy moons, researchers seek places on Earth that mimic specific parameters of interest, the so-called planetary field analogues. Polar regions of the Earth are proven proxies for these icy moons. In this review, we explore how spectroscopic measurements taken on Earth, in particular in its polar regions, may help researchers to identify potential biosignatures on the surfaces of icy moons.
