Cover Story: Crabs are essential marine crustaceans with high economic and ecological significance. This study employs molecular barcoding to rapidly identify invasive blue crab species along the Tunisian coast by analyzing the mitochondrial COI gene, which is widely used in phylogenetics, particularly for crustaceans. The results confirmed the presence of Callinectes sapidus and Portunus pelagicus, distinguishing them from Portunus segnis, which are often misidentified morphologically. BLAST analysis and phylogenetic trees validated the findings, highlighting the COI gene's potential in identifying cryptic species. This approach aids in tracking invasive species' distribution in the Mediterranean and ensures the authenticity of crab-meat products. View this paper
