Cover Story: Using waste biomass to produce transport fuels can reduce dependence on fossil resources and contribute to the decarbonisation of the European transport sector. The BIOMATES project demonstrated an innovative approach that combines renewable carbon from biomass-derived pyrolysis oil with existing petroleum streams to produce hybrid fuels suitable for conventional transport applications. By demonstrating this concept at TRL5, the work represents an important step towards bridging laboratory research and industrial implementation. The approach offers a promising pathway for integrating sustainable biomass resources into existing fuel production infrastructure and accelerating the transition towards lower-carbon fuels for road, aviation and maritime transport. This technology is now being further scaled up through the ABATE project. View this paper
