Cover Story: A meta-analysis was conducted to find out if probiotics are effective in adults with gastroenteritis. In the systematic review, the probiotics were effective in the treatment and/or prevention of chronic inflammatory bowel disease, including ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. However, the meta-analysis did not demonstrate any significant protective effects of the probiotics. The studies found that either the short-term or long-term administration of probiotics is safe.
