Cover Story: The ability to confine light in extremely small dimensions is critical in imaging, biosensing, lasing and other applications. Hyperbolic media metamaterials are a promising means by which to achieve these applications owing to their open-curved hyperbolic dispersion. An indefinite cavity formed by graphene hyperbolic media metamaterials has an ultra-compressed mode volume confinement factor one billion times smaller than the free-space wavelength volume and anomalous scaling rules of a conventional optical cavity. An ultrahigh refractive index of up to nearly three hundred can be realized. The proposed cavity opens a new door allowing light to be condensed down to the nanometric scale, providing a platform with which to explore ultra-strong light–matter interactions at mid-infrared to terahertz spectral ranges.
