Cover Story: Coal fly ashes (CFAs) are byproducts of the combustion process and are repurposed in industrial applications, while also garnering attention as a potential alternative feedstock for critical minerals. A set of representative coal fly ashes (CFAs) was investigated using chemical sequential extraction to assess the mobility of arsenic (As), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), and lead (Pb). The residual fraction, associated with stable iron oxides and aluminosilicate glass phases, and the reducible fraction accounted for the highest mobility of these trace metals. CFAs with higher CaO content had increased trace metal mobility compared to CFAs with higher Fe2O3 content, as suggested by principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) for Cr. View this paper
