Cover Story: Four-coordinate nickel(II) complexes with three halide and a phosphine ligands are fascinating models to explore metal–ligand bonding. The crystal structure presented here confirms the stronger deviations from tetrahedral coordination geometry in bromo complexes compared to the corresponding chloro analogs with identical counterions. This structural difference in the electronic ground state is to be considered in future discussions of bonding, electronic spectra, and magnetic properties of such low-coordinate complexes.
