With the first issue released in June 2023, five new MDPI journals disseminating multi-disciplinary science are due to launch, which will cover the subjects of medicine & pharmacology, biology and physical sciences.

The newly launched journals will be overseen by professional Editorial Board Members and Editors to ensure an accurate and rapid publication, rigorous peer review and broad visibility.

The 2022 citation metrics have been released in the Journal Citation Reports (JCR), and we’re pleased to announce the following results for MDPI journals:

We are thrilled to announce that 90% of our ranked MDPI journals, specifically 86 out of 96 (captured in the table below), are performing above average in Q1 or Q2. This year, Clarivate has expanded its Impact Factor (IF) awards to include journals in the Emerging Sources Citation Index (ESCI) and the Arts and Humanities Citation Index (AHCI), providing greater transparency for the full set of journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection. As a result, 111 of MDPI journals have received their first IF in 2023, with 37 journals surpassing an IF of 3.0. In total, 208 MDPI journals have been honored with an IF.

Clarivate explains that by "expanding the coverage but holding to highly selective standards, the [Impact Factor] is now a reliable indicator of trustworthiness, as well as a measure of scholarly impact, at the journal level."

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Ren-You Gan has been appointed Section Editor-in-Chief of the Section “Probiotic Strains and Fermentation” in Fermentation (ISSN: 2311-5637).

Dr. Ren-You Gan is a Principal Investigator (PI) at the Singapore Institute of Food and Biotechnology Innovation (SIFBI), Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), Singapore. His current research mainly focuses on probiotics and food functional ingredients, including (1) the discovery of probiotic candidate strains (e.g., Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium) from fermented foods and gut microbiota, and the evaluation of their probiotic and functional potential; (2) the clarification of the interaction between food functional ingredients (e.g., phytochemicals and polysaccharides) and gut microbiota, as well as the underlying mechanisms; and (3) the development of functional food formulations with specific health benefit by integrating probiotics and food functional ingredients. He was selected as a Highly Cited Researcher for “Agricultural/Food Sciences” by ClarivateTM in 2021 and 2022.

The following is a short Q&A with Dr. Ren-You Gan, who shared his vision for the journal with us, as well as his views of the research area:

1. What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take on the role as its Section Editor-in-Chief?

The journal Fermentation is an international open access journal with a good reputation and widespread recognition. Concerning its Section “Probiotic Strains and Fermentation”, its topics match my current research well. In my opinion, an excellent probiotic strain is the core necessity for downstreaming fermentation and functional product development, such as probiotics, synbiotics, and postbiotics. Therefore, this research field can be pretty important and I would like to work together with other scientists in this field to further promote its fast development.

2. What is your vision for the Section?

Through this Section as an open platform, I expect that more excellent probiotic strains can be discovered and published, and that their fermentation technologies can be shared to support the translational applications of probiotic strains in the development of healthy and functional foods as well as food functional ingredients.

3. What does the future of this field of research look like?

It is expected that the demand for probiotics will continue to grow after the COVID-19 pandemic as people become more aware of nutrition and health, which will drive the continuous R&D of this field of research. From my viewpoint, one promising interest is the development of precise nutrition and personalized nutrition based on more targeted probiotic strains or postbiotics. In addition, there is a growing interest in the use of fermentation as a way to produce sustainable and healthy food products as well as food functional ingredients.

The Fermentation (ISSN: 2311-5637 ) editorial team is pleased to announce the launch of a new Section, “Probiotic Strains and Fermentation”. This Section aims to establish an updated communication platform to promote the fast development of novel probiotic-strain-related research. We encourage the submission of different types of manuscripts, such as research articles, reviews, communications, opinions, and perspectives, that provide current novel insights and significant advances in the fields. Its scope covers aspects of the discovery, functional and safety evaluation, fermentation technologies, and application of novel probiotic strains, including, but not limited to, the following:

• Mining and discovery of potential probiotic strains (e.g., fungi, lactic acid bacteria, acetic acid bacteria, yeast, certain gut bacteria, etc.) from fermented foods, gut microbiota, and other natural/food sources;
• Discovery of novel postbiotics (e.g., Exopolysaccharides, short-chain fatty acids, and vitamins) from probiotic strains and their functional evaluation;
• Probiotic effects, bioactivities, health benefits, and safety evaluation of potential probiotic strains in vitro and in vivo;
• Metabolic engineering of probiotic strains and related synthetic biology research;
• Drying, stabilization, and encapsulation technologies for probiotic strain protection and delivery;
• Fermentation technologies based on discovered probiotic strains and the development of probiotics-related functional products through fermentation and their application.
