Glacies—A New Open Access Journal

Glacies means “the ice” in Latin. Water is crucial for human life, and over 98% of the world’s freshwater is stored as ice. The water molecule is also unique in that it expands when it freezes due to the small increase in the angle between hydrogen atoms. As such, ice is less dense than liquid water, which has substantial implications. Ice has a primarily hexagonal-shaped crystalline structure, making snow simultaneously unique and exquisite yet fleeting due to metamorphism, melt, and sublimation. Ice is an essential component of human existence and possibly a fundamental part of planetary processes. Humans have interacted with snow and ice for millennia. Today, a substantial portion of the world’s population participate in and/or view indoor and outdoor winter sports, making ice-, snow-, and snowmelt-derived tourism a vital part of the global economy.
There are currently few journals focusing on the topic of snow and ice, and they tend to be focused on a specific component of snow and ice, such as glaciers or technology. Glacies (ISSN: 2813-8740) [1] provides an international open access forum for a wide range of topics related snow and ice, including, but not limited to, atmospheric ice and snow, freshwater ice, glaciology, human interactions with ice and snow, ice- and snow-related natural hazards, ice land masses, oceanic and sea water ice, paleoclimatology, paleoglaciology, snow hydrology, and theoretical and applied physics and chemistry of ice and snow.
This journal is a venue for scientists, engineers, and scholars from any discipline to present and discuss novel ideas, approaches, and research on a variety of topics related to natural, artificial, and extraterrestrial ice and snow, as well as the interactions between ice and snow and the atmospheric, oceanic, and land environments. Original research articles, reviews, communications, etc., on field and laboratory experiments, theoretical methods, and conceptual models of ice and snow will be considered for publication. Papers written by multi-, inter-, and transdisciplinary teams are encouraged.

Short Biography of Author

Glacies 01 00002 i001Dr. Steven R. Fassnacht is a full professor of Snow Hydrology with the Watershed Science program in the Department of Ecosystem Science and Sustainability at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado, U.S.A. He received his Ph.D. in Civil Engineering in 2000 from the University of Waterloo, Canada. His dissertation research focused on improving how snow hydrology processes are represented in models and using weather radar for snowfall estimation. Fassnacht has published extensively on the spatial and temporal variability of snowpack properties. His research combines field measurements and experiments with remote sensing and modeling of snowpack, and also how humans interact with snow and water. His work has taken him to various snow-covered parts of the world. He is the principal of Frech Fassnacht Environmental Water (FFew).
