Cover Story: Liquid hydrogen (LH2) is a promising fuel for future zero-emission aircraft, but its storage at approximately 20 K presents major challenges. Composite materials are attractive for cryogenic tanks due to their high specific properties, yet thermal stresses can critically affect their structural integrity, as demonstrated by the X-33 tank failure. This study assesses two Finite Element (FE) modeling approaches, shell and solid elements, for thermomechanical analysis of composite cryogenic tanks. The approaches are verified using representative geometries under structural and thermal loads. Their applicability is demonstrated through the analysis of a small-scale LH2 tank using an optimized combination of shell and solid elements, providing guidance for efficient and reliable FE modeling strategies for future cryogenic hydrogen tanks. View this paper
