Coatings, Volume 16, Issue 9

2026 September - 128 articles

Cover Story: A steamship crosses the sea, evoking the maritime trade networks through which Qing Dynasty reverse glass paintings travelled between China and the West. An analysis of two such paintings reveals that their tin amalgam coatings have corroded along two distinct pathways. One is conventional oxidation, yielding tin oxides. The other, identified here for the first time in this artifact class, is chloride-driven corrosion producing abhurite and hydroromarchite, suggestive of salt-laden atmospheres. Whether these pathways reflect different storage histories remains open; their coexistence, however, underscores the complexity of degradation and invites a rethinking of preventive conservation for these fragile cultural treasures. View this paper
