Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
We are pleased to invite you to contribute your research to our Special Issue “Transportation Solid Waste in Pavement Maintenance: Materials Recycling, Surface Modification and Management” in Coatings.
In light of global objectives for carbon neutrality and the escalating demand for durable and sustainable transportation infrastructure, the road engineering sector faces two fundamental and interrelated challenges: the environmentally responsible and high-value disposal and recycling of substantial amounts of transportation solid waste, as well as the scientific and cost-effective management and maintenance of in-service road pavements throughout their entire life cycle. The high-value recycling of transportation solid waste provides a low-carbon material solution for pavement maintenance and rehabilitation. The surface modification of recycled materials and systematic surface/coating performance testing are essential foundations for ensuring their reliable long-term utilization in pavement engineering. Furthermore, scientifically refined maintenance management is critical for maximizing the performance potential and life-cycle advantages of pavements constructed with surface-modified recycled materials. This Special Issue is intricately aligned with the core focus of Coatings, emphasizing the surface performance, functional design, and long-term durability of pavement materials. We hereby initiate this Special Issue to gather pioneering original research and comprehensive review articles.
Relevant topics include, but are not limited to:
- Transportation solid waste recycling;
- Surface modification of recycled aggregates/binders;
- Pavement coatings and preventive maintenance;
- Non-destructive testing for pavement surface performance;
- Life cycle assessment of recycled pavement.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-anonymized peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
