Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
The rapid expansion of renewable energy technologies, lightweight structural materials, and high-performance engineering systems has intensified the need for advanced surface engineering solutions capable of operating under harsh environmental conditions. Corrosion, wear, oxidation, and chemical degradation remain critical challenges that directly affect reliability, safety, and lifecycle costs. At the same time, sustainability considerations are increasingly shaping coating development, driving research toward environmentally friendly processing routes, reduced use of hazardous substances, and improved long-term performance.
The Special Issue “Advanced Coatings for Sustainable Protection and Energy-Related Applications” highlights recent advances in coating technologies that enhance the durability, functionality, and sustainability of materials in industrial and energy-related applications. Modern coatings go beyond traditional protection against corrosion, wear, and oxidation, offering multifunctional properties, including self-healing, smart/responsive behaviour, and energy-related functionality. They are essential for enhancing the durability, performance, and sustainability of materials in modern industrial and energy-related applications.
This Special Issue aims to provide a platform for high-quality research and review articles that address innovative coating materials, deposition techniques, and advanced characterization methods, with a strong focus on sustainable and environmentally friendly processes. Contributions that integrate high performance with energy efficiency, green processing, and smart functionality are particularly welcome.
The Special Issue welcomes original research articles and review papers on topics including, but not limited to, the following:
- Smart, self-healing, and responsive coating technologies;
- Coatings for energy-related applications (batteries, fuel cells, photovoltaics, hydrogen systems);
- Protective coatings for corrosion, wear, and oxidation resistance;
- Polymer nanocomposite and multifunctional coatings;
- Plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) coatings for lightweight alloys;
- Physical and chemical vapour deposition (PVD/CVD) coatings;
- Sol–gel and hybrid organic–inorganic coating systems;
- Thermal spray coatings and advanced ceramic layers;
- Sustainable and environmentally friendly coating processes;
- Advanced electrochemical, mechanical, and microstructural characterization methods.
By bringing together high-quality contributions from academia and industry, this Special Issue will serve as a valuable reference for researchers and engineers developing next-generation coating solutions.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Coatings is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2600 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
