Cover Story: The timing of neutering, most commonly related to age at neutering, has been suggested to impact the health outcomes of female dogs. However, very few studies have investigated the associations between neutering before or after known puberty and later health outcomes. The present study investigated the health outcomes of 306 Labrador/Golden Retriever crossbreed bitches that were neutered either before puberty (at six months of age) or after their first oestrus. The results suggest that there may be detrimental associations between neutering before known puberty and some musculoskeletal and immune diseases. Additionally, there may be associations with the age at diagnosis of some diseases. The study findings provide information that improve understanding of the impacts of neutering bitches at specific time points in relation to known puberty. View this paper
