Cover Story: High-magnitude torsional vibrations can cause damages to powertrain components, such as fractured gear teeth and cracks in shafts. Excessive torsional vibrations commonly manifest at resonance, which can be mitigated by modifying the torsional natural frequencies of the system. This study validates a method for adjustment of torsional natural frequencies to mitigate resonant torsional vibrations. Novel coupling design with adjustable torsional stiffness was used to vary the first torsional natural frequency of a powertrain test bench. The predictability was studied by comparing torsional analysis calculations to experimentally measured results. The first torsional natural frequency of the powertrain test bench was predictably adjusted within a wide range, thus validating the method for use in industrial and research applications. View this paper
