Cover Story: MALDI tandem mass spectrometry causes random bond cleavages in polyether copolymers with liquid-crystalline side chains ionized by sodium ions. Both charge-promoted heterolytic bond cleavages and homolytic bond cleavages induced by radicals formed in the side chains take place. The fragments resulting from these dissociations permit conclusive decoding of the comonomer sequence and facile differentiation of block versus random copolymers. View this paper.
