Cover Story: Bioactive-rich foods and their components can modulate chronic low-grade inflammation and immune dysregulation that underlie the pathophysiology of many cardiometabolic and age-related diseases. Grapes are rich in bioactive polyphenols, and evidence from preclinical studies shows that grapes and grape-derived bioactives exert beneficial anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, cardioprotective and immunomodulatory effects. Recent human trials suggest potential benefits for cognitive function, cardiometabolic and antioxidant effects; however, findings remain varied, which may be attributable to differences in grape preparations, study designs, and baseline health status. This review summarizes mechanistic studies and recent intervention trials examining effects of grapes on inflammatory and immune pathways in cardiometabolic disease and aging. View this paper
