2026 August-1 - 179 articles

Cover Story: Ulcerative colitis (UC) and Crohn’s disease (CD), collectively known as inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD), result from a complex interaction of genetic, immunological, microbial, and environmental factors. Diet is a main determinant of gut microbiota composition and intestinal homeostasis. Whole cereals have emerged as promising modulators of gut health, while germination further enhances their content of bioactive compounds, including dietary fiber, polyphenols, γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA), and other phytochemicals with potential anti-inflammation and antioxidant properties. This review provides the first comprehensive overview of the potential role of sprouted grains on IBD, highlighting their effects on the gut microbiota, intestinal barrier function, and intestinal inflammation supporting intestinal health. View this paper
