Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Omega-3 or n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFAs) are a family of nutrients with essential and relevant functions for humans, from reproduction and embryonic development to aging. Among the n-3 PUFAs, alpha-linolenic acid (C18:3n-3, ALA), eicosapentaenoic acid (C20:4n-3, EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6n-3, DHA) have been shown to have the most physiological functions and clinical applications. In this regard, growing clinical evidence has demonstrated that dietary supplementation with n-3 PUFAs provides significant benefits for individuals, particularly in neurological, cardiovascular systems, and in different clinical situations such as metabolic syndrome, specific types of cancer, or inflammatory and reproductive disturbances, among others. Regarding the progress or advances in therapeutic and clinical applications of n-3 PUFAs through the use of nutritional supplements, it is relevant to mention that technological advances have allowed the development of n-3 PUFA nutritional supplements with a high concentration of these fatty acids (particularly EPA and/or DHA) with excellent quality (stable to oxidation and certified as contaminant-free).

Considering this background, the purpose of this Special Issue is to present updated evidence of the health benefits of n-3 PUFAs dietary supplementation in clinical trials, considering different therapeutic or clinical applications, such as: pregnancy and breast feeding period, metabolic and cardiovascular health, inflammation and pain, different types of cancer, cognitive impairment and neurodegenerative diseases or critical patients.

Finally, we hope that this Special Issue will become a source of updated scientific evidence on the therapeutic role and clinical applications of Omega-3 Polyunsaturated Fatty acid dietary supplementation in humans.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.

Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2900 CHF (Swiss Francs).
