Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is increasingly prevalent worldwide, with serious impacts on patients’ quality of life, morbidity and mortality, as well as on healthcare expenditures. Reduced protein intake was used for centuries to ameliorate uremic symptoms and signs. The debatable efficacy as well as several concerns related to nutritional safety considerably decreased the interest of both practitioners and patients. However, in the last decades, growing evidence supports the efficacy of dietary protein restriction to postpone dialysis initiation, mainly through amelioration of metabolic abnormalities in advanced CKD, but also by slowing down the rate of progression, while preserving a good nutritional status. Consequently, NKF Guidelines for nutrition in CKD currently recommend certain levels of protein restriction in CKD patients.

For this Special Issue, we invite original research articles and review articles that focus on the evidence regarding protein restriction in delaying the progression of renal function, improving metabolic abnormalities, and postponing the initiation of dialysis. We also welcome discussions on the following: balancing nutritional status maintenance, exploring methods to enhance patient adherence, and developing personalized nutritional strategies in specific clinical scenarios.

Manuscript Submission Information

Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Nutrients is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
