Cover Story: Religious tourism in India is often measured by visitor numbers, temple income and infrastructure, yet its everyday economy depends on small informal actors. Drawing on Jejuri and Tuljapur in Maharashtra, this study shows how temple-town economies are sustained by retailers, street vendors, priests, lodge operators, food sellers and family enterprises that provide ritual goods and services that encompass religious retail, including flowers, coconuts, turmeric, sacred threads, prasad, idols and food. These livelihoods are often informal, low-margin and seasonal, with limited access to credit or training. The study frames temple towns as embedded entrepreneurial ecosystems shaped by ritual authority, social networks, informality and seasonality, and calls for greater recognition and support for micro-enterprises central to religious tourism. View this paper
