Cover Story: Epigenetic alteration regulating histone modifications has been an emerging strategy to control genes in immune and metabolic systems against dietary stress. Bioactive compounds (BCs) prevent inflammation, oxidative stress, and metabolic dysfunction by modulating cellular redox balance and histone modifications. BCs activate sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and nuclear factor-erythroid factor 2-related factor 2 (NRF2) to modulate immunological and metabolic progress, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and the NAD+/NADH ratio. The functions of BCs can be classified into two categories: one facilitates the reductive microenvironment from an oxidation state by scavenging free radicals; the other regulates the activity of transcription factors related to the immune system and energy metabolism.
