Cover Story: Axial profiling of planetary pins is a key design parameter for improving the load‑carrying capacity of plain bearings in planetary gear stages. In the design process, both elastic deformation and the uniformity of the minimum lubricant film thickness are crucial factors, and their combined consideration enables a substantial increase in load‑carrying performance. Additional optimization potential of the journal bearing system arises from theoretical and experimental studies on the influence of the lube oil pocket position. An incremental shift in the pocket over an angular span outside the load zone yields a substantial reduction in oil flow rate by the factor of three without affecting hydrodynamic pressure distribution, which may lead to a significant reduction in pump power. View this paper
