Cover Story: Ischemic stroke is the second leading cause of death and the third leading cause of disability. To reduce morbidity and mortality, early and effective therapy is key. For vascular occlusion, mechanical thrombectomy is an increasingly prevalent and efficient therapeutic option. Hyperdense artery signs can suggest intracranial vascular occlusion in non-enhanced computed tomography (NECT). This work presents a prototype for automated intracranial clot detection that can not only find arterial thrombi but also measure their length and volume in the NECT. This new method can support radiologists in speeding up stroke diagnosis and subsequent patient management, especially in peripheral hospitals or settings where CT angiography is not available.
