Cover Story: In this study, a bioremediation capsule was fabricated based on a vapor sublimation and deposition process and was composed of poly-p-xylylene matrix, viable Bacillus bacteria, and encapsulated carboxymethyl cellulose. The fabrication process used water/ice templates and a dry and clean vapor-phase process that preserved the sensitive biomolecules and their biological functions. Synergistic enzymatic activity was found to be regulatable and proportional to the concentration of the decorated carboxymethyl cellulose molecules in the same capsule construct. The capsules exhibited a customizable production in terms of physical dimensions and biochemical functions of bioremediation products. View this paper
