Cover Story: Early successional native New Zealand vegetation is highly vulnerable to fire. Post-fire regrowth contends with introduced grasses and fire-adapted woody weeds. The resulting assembly is highly combustible. Fire can recur at short intervals, resetting succession and trapping native vegetation in a recurrent fire trap. We studied young native plants in such conditions. The grass fire desiccated but did not ignite most plants. Shoot growth did not resume, but many species resprouted from the base. Native woody plants, many of low shoot flammability and expressing basal resprouting, could therefore be used more widely in green firebreaks. It is crucial that young regenerating areas are protected from fire in high-fire-risk areas. First, the fire trap needs to be recognised for what it is. Next, the tinderbox of long grass and woody weeds needs to be controlled. View this paper
