Cover Story: Migratory ducks are a predominant natural host and environmental reservoir of influenza A viruses. They harbour low-pathogenicity avian influenza viruses that can spread to chickens when they come into contact with commercial poultry flocks. In chickens, these viruses can mutate to become highly pathogenic and more likely to infect humans. Chickens succumb to fatal disease from highly pathogenic avian influenza viruses because they lack a crucial innate immune receptor at the first line of defense. Mallard ducks, on the other hand, are much more likely to successfully combat highly-pathogenic avian influenza viruses because of a rapid and balanced innate immune response that limits systemic spread and harmful inflammation.
