Cover Story: Surface wettability governs the biological performance of Ti implants; however, UV-responsive wettability is limited by the poor tissue penetration of UV light. Here, a black TiO2 coating with NIR-responsive wettability was fabricated on Ti by one-step plasma spraying. Under 808 nm NIR irradiation, the water contact angle increased from 0° to 154.4 ± 4.0°, shifting the surface from hydrophilic to stably hydrophobic. Moreover, NIR-induced photothermal heating removed surface hydroxyl groups and passivated oxygen-deficient sites, driving this transition. The hydrophobic surface promoted anti-inflammatory M2 macrophage polarization, and inhibited S. aureus adhesion by 98.61%. NIR-tunable wettability thus provides concurrent immunomodulatory and antibacterial effects for light-responsive orthopedic implants. View this paper
