Batteries, Volume 7, Issue 4

2021 December - 25 articles

Cover Story: Short circuits in lithium-ion batteries, caused by the mechanical loading conditions during a car crash, are currently a major topic in electric vehicle safety. The publication shows the creation of a finite element model of a cylindrical lithium-ion battery using state-of-the-art testing and simulation techniques. For the virtual short circuit prediction, a variety of short-circuit criteria based on stresses, strains, and geometric parameters are tested. Finally, it is shown that a combination of two geometric criteria is best suited for virtual short-circuit detection in the presented simulation case. The simulation model is built using a macroscopic approach, shortening simulation time and making it applicable for use in full vehicle simulations. View this paper.
