2026 October - 69 articles

Cover Story: High ex–post actuarial returns can coexist with modest monthly disability pensions. We analyse 26,719 Spanish pension award records from 2015 to 2023, comparing benefits with estimated notional contribution capital. Women generally receive lower pensions but show higher contribution-relative returns in the main benefit categories, and returns generally decline with age at award and contribution duration. The figure connects an interrupted contribution career with a potentially long pension payment stream, illustrating the insurance function behind this apparent paradox. Income, actuarial returns and individual capital gaps require joint interpretation, and award-level gaps do not measure the pension system’s aggregate financial balance. View this paper
