New Technologies, Green Transformation and Education for Sustainable Growth

This special issue belongs to the section “Economic Development“.

Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As the world confronts complex challenges related to climate change, digital disruption and socio-economic inequality, the integration of new technologies into sustainable development strategies has become both urgent and transformative. This Special Issue explores the dynamic interplay between technological innovation, green transformation and education in shaping pathways toward sustainable economic growth. It examines how emerging technologies, such as artificial intelligence, digital platforms, smart infrastructure and renewable energy systems, among others, are driving the green transition, while simultaneously reshaping labor markets, industrial processes and governance models. Education plays a central role in this process, as both the workforce and learning systems must adapt to meet the demands of a technologically advanced economy. Formal, informal and non-formal education must evolve to provide the skills and competencies needed for long-term sustainability and resilience. By bringing together interdisciplinary research and case studies from diverse global contexts, this issue aims to advance understanding of how technology, sustainability and education intersect, and how this convergence can be leveraged to foster inclusive, innovation-driven and environmentally responsible growth, which might include (but is not limited to):

  • The role of emerging technologies (AI, blockchain, IoT, VR, etc.) in driving sustainability;
  • Sustainable development goals (SDGs);
  • Green transformation;
  • Education for sustainable and digital transitions;
  • The relationship between new technologies and workforce development, reskilling and upskilling;
  • Integrating sustainability and digital literacy in formal, informal and non-formal education;
  • Labor markets, human capital and inclusive growth;
  • The impact of technology implementation on sustainable growth and educational outcomes;
  • Policy, governance and cross-sector collaboration;
  • Successful models of integrating technology, education and sustainability.
