Cover Story: The paper presents an experimentally validated method for predicting PWM-induced iron losses in laminated steel under inverter-like excitation. DC-biased measurements on ring cores are used to construct three-dimensional loss maps defined by the minor-loop variables ΔB, dB/dt, and Bbias. These maps allow estimation of the PWM contribution to total AC iron losses by comparing minor loops from AC excitation, obtained through FEA and nonlinear dynamic model simulations with those measured under DC bias. Validation on three M400-50A ring cores showed agreement between calculated and measured losses within ±5% across different switching frequencies. The method is developed as a foundation for future applications toward more complex electrical machine geometries. View this paper
