Cover Story: This paper describes the process of cloning serotonin N-acetyltransferase (SNAT) from the model streptophyte green alga Chara braunii. SNAT is pivotal to melatonin biosynthesis, catalyzing either serotonin into N-acetylserotonin or 5-methoxytryptamine into melatonin. Melatonin plays pleiotropic roles as either a potent antioxidant or signaling molecule regulating multifunctional roles under stressed and unstressed conditions in living organisms. Consistent with the general role of melatonin, overexpression of Chara braunii SNAT (CbSNAT) increased melatonin synthesis in rice and confers resistance to the peroxidizing herbicide butafenacil through increased expression of protoporphyrinogen oxidase 1, a target enzyme of butafenacil, which was achieved through the transcriptional regulatory effects of melatonin. View this paper
