Cover Story: This survey reviews recent advances in the analysis and numerical treatment of spectral fractional diffusion equations. We focus on efficient computational methods, including rational approximations for fractional elliptic operators and adaptive finite element techniques for polygonal domains with geometric singularities. The survey also examines the use of fractional diffusion operators in preconditioning coupled and multiphysics problems, improving the robustness and convergence of iterative solvers. In addition, we discuss maximum principles, monotonicity preservation, and scalable reduced and multilevel iteration methods, concluding with open challenges and future research directions in fractional diffusion modeling. View this paper
