Cover Story: Small robotic devices for tetherless motion on hard, soft, and biological surfaces hold promise as on-chip manipulators or as in vivo operators. Magnetically guiding these devices using rotating magnetic fields has created a field of small, controllable robotic devices whose dimensions range from tens of nanometers to several millimeters. Magnetically aligned nanorods in alginate capsules enable capsules to climb inclines, traverse tissues, push objects, and release payloads under magnetic guidance. In this issue, authors describe magnetically aligning nanorods in alginate capsules, enabling capsules to climb inclines, traverse tissues, push objects, and release payloads under magnetic guidance.
