We are pleased to announce the launch of a new initiative, the Special Issue Mentor Program.

This program intends to provide an opportunity for early-career scientists to enhance their editing, networking, and organizational skills and to work closely with our journal to gain more editorial experience. Early-career scientists who have novel ideas for new Biosensors Special Issues will act as Guest Editors under the mentorship of an experienced scientist; this mentor could be a member of the Editorial Board of Biosensors (ISSN: 2079-6374), or from other well-established research institutes or laboratories, etc.

If you are interested in this opportunity, please send your Special Issue proposal to the Biosensors Editorial Office (biosensors@mdpi.com) and we will discuss the process (i.e., mentor collaboration, Special Issue topic feasibility analysis, etc.) in further detail.

In addition to the new Special Issue Mentor Program, Biosensors will continually welcome all Special Issue proposals based on hot research topics as usual.

We are pleased to announce that Prof. Dr. Chenzhong Li has been appointed Associate Editor of the “Optical and Photonic Biosensors” Section in Biosensors (ISSN 2079-6374).

Prof. Dr. Chenzhong Li is the Professor of Biomedical Engineering and Biochemistry and the Deputy Director of the Center for Cellular and Molecular Diagnostics at Tulane University School of Medicine.

Before joining Tulane in 2021, Prof. Dr. Li held the Worlds Ahead professor position in Biomedical Engineering, and he is also the director of the Nanobioengineering/Bioelectronics Core at Florida International University (Miami).

Prof. Dr. Li is the former Program Director of the Biosensing Program of the National Science Foundation for the USA and he oversaw research projects in the fields of biosensors and biomedical devices.

Prof. Dr. Li is a world-renowned expert in bioinstrumentation, specifically in the development of biomedical devices for both diagnostic and therapeutic purposes; these devices can also have cross-applications for disease diagnosis, environmental and food safety monitoring, drug screening, and homeland security. The impact of his work is documented in 15 granted patents and around 160 peer-reviewed journal papers. Prof. Dr. Li’s research interests include biosensors, Point-of-Care Testing (POCT), cell/tissue electronics, the neuron–device interface, cell/organ-on-a-chip, electric therapy, as well as the electron transfer study of various biomaterials. He is the founder of three startup companies in China, Canada, and the USA.

In recognition of his work, Prof. Dr. Li has received several awards and honors, including the Kauffman Entrepreneurship Professor Award, the JSPS (Japan) Professor Fellowship Award, the 2016 Pioneer in Technology Development Award from the Society of Braining Mapping, and the 2016 Minority-Serving Institution Faculty Award in Cancer Research from the American Association for Cancer Research (AACR).

Prof. Dr. Li is the elected fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a fellow member of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI).

Sensor technology has been shown to be suitable for applications in many important fields, including industrial applications, security medical diagnostics, and environmental monitoring. This international conference, supported by the Photonics Society of Poland, Warsaw University of Technology, as well as MDPI’s Sensors (ISSN: 1424-8220), will bring together scientists from different areas to discuss important recent developments in sensor technology. Academic editors play a crucial role in leading our journals and ensuring that each article undergoes a robust and timely peer-review. With the launch of Topics this year and addition of Topic Editors to our family of academic editors, we decided it would be a good time to restructure our academic boards, thus providing more clarity and support for each role. MDPI is pleased to announce the launch of a new position—Topical Advisory Panel Member, that will replace the previous position of Topics Board Member. The Topical Advisory Panel will be comprised of early career researchers eager to gain experience in editorial work.

The main responsibility of the new members of the Topical Advisory Panel is to regularly provide support to Guest Editors, Topic Editors, and Section Board Members. The responsibilities of the Topical Advisory Panel are available here: https://www.mdpi.com/editors.

Each year, the members’ performances are evaluated, and outstanding members are promoted to the Editorial Board by the Editor-in-Chief.

To qualify as a Topical Advisory Panel Member, applicants must:

• Have expertise and experience in the field related to the journal;
• Have received a Ph.D. in the last 10 years, approximately;
• Have at least 6-8 published papers in the last 5 years as first author or corresponding author;
• Currently hold an independent research position in academia or a government institute.

International Open Access Week is an important opportunity to catalyze new conversations, create connections across and between communities that can facilitate this co-design, and advance progress in the building of more equitable foundations for opening knowledge—discussions and actions that need to be continued, year in and year out. MDPI has always aimed to provide professional and efficient publishing services to scholars around the world.

Our mission is to make scientific research accessible to everyone; this year, we interview and hold discussions with open science ambassadors on how to build an equal and inclusive environment for open science. Academic editors help us collaborate with more institutions to advocate for open access ideas.

We are pleased to announce that Biosensors is now welcoming nominations for the 2021 Biosensors Early-Career Women Awards. This prize will be awarded to three female investigators in recognition of their excellence in the field of biosensors. All nominations will be assessed by the Journal Award Committee, which will be led by the EiCs, and the winners will be announced on 30 January 2022.

Prizes:

• One first prize of CHF 2000 (Swiss francs), and two second prizes of CHF 800;
• The option to publish one paper free of charge for the first prize, and an 800 CHF discount for the two second prizes, in the journal in 2022, following peer review;
• An engraved plaque.

Award terms and conditions:

1. Nominees should be early-career researchers, with untenured positions, who are within 10 years of completing their PhD.
2. Nominees must have produced ground-breaking research and made a significant contribution to the field of biosensors.
3. Nominees can only apply for one award at a time. You cannot apply for the Biosensors 2021 Young Investigator Award simultaneously with this award.

List of documents for nomination:

• Detailed curriculum vitae, including an updated publication list and a list of the researcher’s own research grants;
• Scanned copy of doctorate or medical certificate;
• Signed nomination letters from two established senior researchers.
