Cover Story: Once the silos are opened, time works against the nutritional value of the silage. But how does the temperature at ensiling factor into this? Our study shows that the temperature during fermentation is an important factor determining the aerobic stability of the silage. Whole-plant maize silage fermented and stored at 23 °C remained stable significantly longer than silage exposed to warmer conditions at 33 °C. Lowering the temperature after fermentation could not compensate for the effects of warmer ensiling conditions. These results were supported by the silage temperature, pH and O2 content behind the silo face. A biological additive containing lactic acid bacteria had a stronger influence on aerobic stability than fermentation temperature. These findings highlight why the occurrence of rising temperatures during ensiling matters for feed quality and farm management. View this paper
