Cover Story: Gold-exfoliated monolayer MoS2 is a promising semiconducting 2D material for innovative electronics thanks to its direct bandgap and high charge-carrier mobility. Nonetheless, post-synthetic strategies are needed to overcome the limitations originating from the specific production route. Mild temperature treatments conducted under a controlled O2 atmosphere are proven to be a reliable strategy to tune its optical and electronic properties. A doubling of the emission intensity of monolayer MoS2 was observed under the best treatment condition due to the remediation of sulfur vacancies and to the removal of naturally occurring impurities.
