Cover Story: The microbiome in the uterine environment is involved in apoptosis and proliferation during the menstrual cycle. However, bacteria in the uterus can stimulate inflammation, which when chronic leads to malignancy. Moreover, an altered gut microbiota initiates the inflammatory response through pathogen-associated molecular patterns. Intestinal bacteria secreting the enzyme β-glucuronidase may also increase the level of circulating estrogen. Both uterine and gut microbiota play key roles in immunological balance and inducement which is why there is a demand for further investigation from both the diagnostic and therapeutic perspectives. Interestingly, many aspects remain unresolved. View this paper
