Cover Story: Abandoned coal-mine drainage (CMD) is a source of rare earth elements (REEs) for biomining. Pennsylvania has ~500 CMD passive remediation systems (PRSs) that accumulate REE solids. Microbial biogeochemical cycling releases REEs, producing an affordable and valuable leachate. We determined the best isolates for biomining REEs from four CMD PRSs as Bacillus mycoides and Bacillus pseudomycoides. Successful REE bioleaching by these bacteria is likely due to acid production, interactions with CMD solids, and biofilm formation. Aluminum solubilization was a REE microbial release indicator. Determining the microbial metabolism involved in CMD release of REEs is crucial for optimizing biomining. Our work addresses the need for novel REE recovery methods from unconventional domestic sources. View this paper
