Cover Story: The reports on the modification of CeO2 are mainly focused on its morphological design instead of the direct adjusting of its surface properties. Here, a series of CeO2-X catalysts (X = 9/11/13) was synthesized via simple impregnation in KOH solution. These modified CeO2-X possess an increasing number of surface basic sites and an enhanced CO2 adsorption capacity. To evaluate the catalytic ability of CeO2-X, a novel reactor was designed which enables the solvent-free polymerization of 1,6-hexanediol (HDO) and CO2 at atmospheric pressure (0.1 MPa). The result showed that oligomeric carbonate diols were successfully synthesized and that CeO2-11 exhibited a 50% improvement in catalytic activity over the unmodified CeO2. In addition to the number of basic sites, the importance of the catalyst's specific surface area in its catalytic performance has also been discussed.
