Cover Story: Can bioelectrochemical systems selectively convert CO2 into valuable carboxylic acids without chemical inhibitors (as 2-bromoethanesulfonate BES/BESA)? An acetogen-enriched mixed microbial culture was developed through inoculum pretreatment and bioaugmentation with Acetobacterium woodii. Subsequently, by controlling the cathodic potential, CO2 reduction was steered toward acetogenesis while limiting methanogenesis. At −0.7 V vs. SHE, acetate showed the highest selectivity and methane formation remained low; moreover, under −0.9 V, bioaugmentation strongly suppressed methane production while maintaining acetate formation and enhancing biocathodic activity. These results demonstrate an inhibitor-free strategy to steer mixed-culture bioelectrochemical systems toward value-added products from CO2-containing waste streams. View this paper
