Special Issue Information
Dear Colleagues,
In recent years, intelligent methods in medical image processing and segmentation have become indispensable tools in the healthcare industry, significantly enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of diagnostic/therapeutic procedures. These advanced techniques enable precise analysis and interpretation of complex medical signals and images, leading to earlier detection, more accurate diagnoses, and improved patient outcomes. The application of artificial intelligence, machine learning, and deep learning has revolutionized how medical signal/images — from molecular and cellular to tissue and organ levels — are processed and analysed.
We are pleased to announce a call for papers for a Special Issue titled “Intelligent Methods in Medical Image Processing and Segmentation”. This issue will focus on the latest advancements in the field of biomedical image processing, covering a broad range of imaging modalities, including molecular and cellular imaging, as well as tissue and organ imaging.
We invite original research papers, reviews, and technical notes on the following topics, though submissions are not limited to these areas:
- Recent Advances in Biomedical Image Processing;
- Innovative Approaches to Image Segmentation;
- Machine Learning and Deep Learning in Medical Image Analysis;
- Molecular and Cellular Imaging;
- Tissue and Organ Imaging;
- Data Fusion and Multi-modal Imaging;
- Automated Diagnosis and Image Classification.
Potential image datasets that are of particular interest include the following:
- X-ray Imaging;
- Computed Tomography (CT);
- Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI);
- Ultrasound Imaging;
- Nuclear Medicine;
- Optical and Confocal Microscopy;
- Video and Range Data Images.
We encourage contributions that explore both novel methods and practical applications of intelligent techniques in medical image processing, with an emphasis on improving diagnostic/therapeutic accuracy, treatment planning, and patient outcomes. Submissions from a wide range of disciplines, including computer science, biomedical engineering, and medical imaging, are welcome.

Manuscript Submission Information
Manuscripts should be submitted online at www.mdpi.com by registering and logging in to this website. Once you are registered, click here to go to the submission form. Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.
Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. A guide for authors and other relevant information for submission of manuscripts is available on the Instructions for Authors page. Bioengineering is an international peer-reviewed open access monthly journal published by MDPI.
Please visit the Instructions for Authors page before submitting a manuscript. The Article Processing Charge (APC) for publication in this open access journal is 2700 CHF (Swiss Francs). Submitted papers should be well formatted and use good English. Authors may use MDPI's English editing service prior to publication or during author revisions.
