Cover Story: Forest management at metal-contaminated sites using tree species with conservative ecological strategies can ensure efficient metal confinement in the rhizosphere, the production of contaminant-free forest products, and the reintegration of contaminated sites that are too costly to decontaminate into the economic cycle. Pioneer trees and shrubs that spontaneously reclaim metal-polluted sites may be insufficient to prevent the spread of pollutants in the environment due to their high nutrient requirements, which also promote the transfer of mobile heavy metals aboveground. Phytostabilisation using forest trees can help to rehabilitate brownfield sites safely and inexpensively, provided that the species-specific autecological properties of managed tree species are also considered. View this paper
